Harvest Season: How to Dry and Cure Cannabis Without Wasting Your Hard Work
You've spent months on your plants. The next few weeks decide whether that work pays off. Here's how I handle harvest, drying and curing.
When to harvest. Don't go by the calendar. Look at the trichomes with a jeweler's loupe or a cheap pocket microscope. Clear means too early. Mostly cloudy is peak potency. A little amber gives a heavier, more relaxing effect. Pick your moment and cut.
Watch for bud rot. Fall brings cold nights, dew and rain, which is perfect weather for gray mold inside dense colas. Check the centers of your biggest buds. If you see brown, mushy spots or signs of mold, remove and discard the entire affected bud, not just the visibly damaged parts. Mold can spread beyond what you can see. Keep infected material away from the rest of your harvest and inspect nearby buds carefully.
Drying. Hang whole plants or branches upside down in a dark room with gentle air movement, not a fan blowing on them. Aim for about 60°F and 60% humidity. Expect 7 to 14 days. It's ready when small stems snap instead of bend.
Curing. Trim, then fill glass jars about three-quarters full. For the first two weeks, open them once or twice a day for a few minutes. If the buds feel damp or smell like hay, leave the lids off longer. After two weeks, open them every few days. A two-to-four-week cure makes a real difference in smell and smoothness. Many growers keep humidity packs at 58 to 62% in the jars.
The most common mistakes: drying too hot and fast, packing jars too tight, and skipping the cure because you're impatient. Slow wins.
